Dénia is one of the oldest villages on the Costa Blanca and a popular holiday destination. A few centuries before Christ, on the site of present day Dénia, there was a Greek colony. The Romancastle, constructed in the 11th and 12th century, sits upon a hill above the village. The climb up can be quite arduous on hot days, but it is worth it. The Palau del Governador and accompanying museum can also be visited with the same entrance ticket. Visitors ccan of course also dream away whilst absorbing the breathtaking views of Dénia.
The nicest square in Dénia is Plaça de La Constitucion. On this square you will find the office of the Mayor, as well as the 18th century church, Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de La Asunción. Do not forget to visit the church, if only to see the beautiful entrance.
Old center and the port
On the other side of the square lies the old city center of Dénia. The seaside offers many restaurants, bars and shops. Much more interesting are the streets and squares behind it, where the original character of the village has been preserved. A great example of that is the Placeta de la Crue. The nicest shopping street in Dénia is Calle del Marqués de Campo.
The port of Dénia has three functions. Like in many other coastal towns resorts on the Costa Blanca, this is where you’ll find the fish auction. Dénia also has one of the most popular yaughting marinas in the coastal region, where visitors can enjoy the large and luxurious yaughts. Thirdly, the port of Dénia connects you via ferry boats to the Balearic Islands. If you want to travel from mainland Spain to Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza or Formenera, then this is your port of departure.
